Snakes

Actually I hardly class a boa as a snake, although I did see a very spirited one wrap itself round and round and round the arm of my friend, Fitzcarraldo, once. It was funny for a while, and then it wasn’t – at least, not for him apparently. I know they can swallow pigs. I reckon I’m fatter than a pig, but am I flattering myself in thinking I could get away, no trouble? I’ll have to report back on that.

Anyway, ‘spot the snake’ is a game we play, and this was just a smallish one, around three or four feet. Fanny ‘Attenborough’ spotted it hurrying across the trail and by the time I arrived on the scene, it was basking on a tree. She reckoned it was a female, waiting for a male. I don’t know. But it was a beautiful and unusually dark irridescent blue in some lights.

There’s a been a bit of unseasonal rain recently, and that has brought a few snakes up to the surface from their boggy holes. A couple of bird-eaters have been seen around the hotel, and stomping down the hill in a seething temper because of heavy bags, slippery shoes and a dithering issue that delayed my departure from the office  until the moment the skies opened, I kicked out at a brown snake in my path. I have no idea what got into me, and I didn’t have a serious chance of making contact, but all the same. According to different people I’ve spoken to, it was either deadly or harmless.
